*Update 03/10/2023: SITU has started holding outdoor events this year, post Covid. Our educational wing, SITU University, has quite a line up as well. If you wish to participate in outdoor costuming opportunities, please visit our Calendar, or the website of Lady Victoria of Esses: www.LadyVictoriaPresents.com You can find her Dress-up Opportunities under “Happenings” Enjoy!
On this website, you will find information about historical costuming in Seattle, SITU’s scheduled upcoming events, activities in which you can participate, photos from our past events, educational information from SITU-University, such as Design Studios & Workshops
There are also links to other costume sites in Seattle or our sister associations. We also feature at least one example of the new “ezine,” an electronic magazine which contain images from recent gatherings. You’ll find information from SITU-University with upcoming sessions, suggestions on obtaining fabric deals, “Dress Up Opportunities” which are taking place in communities near us (these are mostly non-SITU activities, little “fill-in” sort of opportunities), to which you can arrive individually or as a group in costume.
Do you love to dress Victorian? Does the Flapper or Regency Era appeal to you more? How about 18th century fine ladies/gents or even pirates? SITU covers a wide range of eras! Men, women, and children welcome!
The SITU “season” commences with an opulent Winter Event. We have danced our way through Old Vienna, Georgian and Dickens’ England, and the Russia of the Romanovs.
Spring and Autumn Events are typically smaller and more informal. Themes have included an 18th century fair, a Gothic literary tea, a 19th century explorer’s gathering, a 1920s speakeasy, a nightclub in 1930s Shanghai, and murder mysteries.
Summer Events feature al fresco gatherings such as garden parties, Victorian bathing parties, a day at the horse races, a cricket match, and a tiger hunt in the India of the Raj!
Events may include a potluck meal or Victorian tea, contests and games, period music, vintage dancing, entertainment, trips to historic sites, planes, trains, cars and boats!
They are always fun for singles, couples and families. Every attempt is made to keep costs reasonable and the event inclusive of gentlemen and children’s interests as well as ladies.
SITU social activities are produced by our members, and all are encouraged to participate in planning and creating the events! A fun way to wear costumes Seattle!
Our membership is drawn from all around the greater Puget Sound, Seattle, Washington area. Although we gather most of our members from the general Seattle area, we have always had a small but active group in Portland and a smattering of members further away. Some of our members reside north of Seattle near the Canadian border, south into Oregon, and east of the Cascade Mountains to the Idaho border! Everyone with an interest in history and costuming is welcome.
Costumes need not be elaborate or expensive – we ask only that those who attend an event make an attempt at period costume to add to the atmosphere and enjoyment of the occasion. Help with costumes is always available from our members, and there is a Sewing Circle that meets regularly.
SITU is now offering various Design Studios and Workshops where members and friends can learn How to Costume, Beginning Sewing, learn to sew specific outfits, make or decorate hats, or any other number of “How To” themes.
Membership in SITU is only $20 per household per year. As a Member Bonus, many events have lower costs especially for members. By going to our Board Page you see the list of the current Board. You can visit the Membership Page in order to begin a membership with SITU! Please complete a membership form, or have one sent or emailed to you by a Board Member.
We invite you to stroll thru our website and enjoy the many features we have added. More changes and improvements are coming. If we can be of help to you in any way, please contact the Web Mistress with any suggestions or questions.
